When Front-Tooth Discoloration, Gaps, or Shape Bother You

With front-tooth concerns, the first step is figuring out why they look the way they do. Even dark color can come from staining, a dead nerve, or intrinsic discoloration, and whether whitening works differs accordingly. The same goes for gaps and shape. Boston Miso Dental Clinic in Uijeongbu identifies the cause first, then reviews options in order of least tooth removal — whitening → resin → Minish (MINISH) → crowns.

Why is a front tooth dark?

What if a front tooth has a gap or an uneven shape?

What should I check at home first?

  1. Whether just one tooth is dark or all of them are — if it's just one, a nerve problem is possible.
  2. A history of trauma — whether you remember falling and hitting a front tooth as a child.
  3. Bruxism or nail-biting — these wear down the edges of front teeth. If they continue after restoration, the wear will recur.
  4. The degree of change you want — the method differs depending on whether you just want it "brighter" or want the "shape changed too."

What does the dentist check?

We check whether the nerve is alive and whether there's inflammation at the root tip with a pulp vitality test and an X-ray. A Qray exam checks for early cavities and hairline cracks, and intraoral photos and a model let us look at the gumline and tooth proportions together. When considering Minish or crowns, we preview the shape and shade before proceeding.

Treatment options, from least tooth removal up

  1. Whitening — staining or overall darkness. No tooth structure is removed.
  2. Resin — a small gap or a small fracture. Minimal removal.
  3. Minish — repairs worn, eroded, or damaged areas with a material close to natural tooth. We consider it before a laminate veneer, since it removes less tooth. The difference is laid out on our Minish page.
  4. Cosmetic restorations such as crowns — for a tooth that's had root canal treatment or is heavily damaged. Cosmetic Crowns & Veneers.

You can see the actual decision-making process in All Six Front Teeth, Long Put Off Out of Fear of the Dentist, Restored with Minish. Minish is done only with genuine, certified materials.

FAQ

How much lighter will whitening make my teeth?

If staining is the cause, teeth lighten noticeably, but results are limited for internal discoloration. We'll tell you the expected outcome after an exam, and if whitening isn't enough, we'll explain other options.

What's the difference between Minish and laminate veneers?

A laminate veneer shaves down the front surface and bonds on a ceramic shell, while Minish repairs only the damaged area with a material close to natural tooth, so how much tooth is removed differs between the two. How much is removed depends on the condition of your tooth, and we consider the option that removes less first.

Only one front tooth is dark — can whitening fix it?

If the tooth's nerve has died, regular whitening won't work, and we first consider non-vital tooth whitening done from inside the tooth. If there's inflammation at the root tip, root canal treatment comes first.
